You can import controls, courses, and classes from an XML file in the IOF XML version 3.0 format. The format has been specified in the IOF Interface Standards project, and most event administration and course setting programs can export it. You can find more information on the IOF home page at https://www.orienteering.sport under the menu IOF / IT Commission / Interface Standards project.
Starting the import
There are two ways to start an import:
•select the menu File / Import course data / From IOF XML v3...
•use the toolbar button "Import from a file" in one of the spreadsheets showing controls, courses, or classes. This button accepts both Condes event files (.wcd) and IOF XML files.
A "File open" dialog appears. Select the XML file and click "Open". If Condes can read the file, the Copy/Import Objects dialog opens. It shows the contents of the XML file to the left and your current event to the right. There you choose which controls, courses, and classes to copy into your event.
Supported file types
Condes can import from two kinds of IOF XML v3 files:
1.CourseData files: a full set of course data, as exported by course setting programs such as OCAD, Purple Pen, or Condes. Condes reads:
▪Controls: the control code, the control type, and its position. The position can be a position on the map, a geographic position (latitude/longitude), or both.
▪Courses: the name, CourseFamily, length, climb, and the sequence of controls. The first control on a course is treated as the start and the last as the finish. Imported courses get the same discipline as the current event.
▪Classes: the class-to-course assignments (ClassCourseAssignment), which link each class to a course or CourseFamily.
If the file contains more than one race, Condes imports only the first one.
2.ClassList files: a list of classes, typically exported from an event administration system. Condes imports only the class names (the short name if there is one, otherwise the full name). The classes are not assigned to any courses, so you have to do that in Condes afterwards.
Condes can't import from other IOF XML file types, such as EntryList, StartList, or ResultList, using this command. If the file isn't a valid XML file, Condes shows an error message. If it's valid XML but not one of the supported types, Condes reports that the file could not be imported.
Relay teams
A CourseData file can also contain relay team assignments (TeamCourseAssignment). The course data import ignores them. To import relay teams, select the menu Relay / Import Relay Teams... For more information, see Import Relay Teams dialog.
Control codes
Condes supports control codes of up to 3 characters. If the file contains longer control codes (which can happen, for example, with files from OCAD), Condes gives those controls new codes automatically. Courses that use those controls are updated to match.
Control positions
If the XML file gives geographic positions (latitude/longitude) for the controls, Condes uses them to place the controls on each georeferenced map in your event. On maps that are not georeferenced, Condes uses the map positions in the file.
Pitfall
If a control, course, or class with the same code or name already exists in your event, Condes asks whether to overwrite it.
