Overprinting "Blendmode Darken" vs. "Overprint Operator"

Posted by Hans
I'm using Condes 9.5.2 and I'm looking for the overprinting-mode which brings the best printing result on a high-end digital printing maschine (postscript-printer).
I'm a bit confused about the two different overprint-modes. I see no differents in the two different pdfs if I examine it with PitStop. Also the difference of the filesize is only 4 bytes (2.951.959 vs. 2.951.955 bytes). I'm thinking in the past there is a bigger difference between the two modes.
Thank you for your help.

Hello Hans,

You are right - when inspecting the file, there should be very insignificant visible difference, and the file sizes should be virtually identical.

Initially, the reason for introducing blend mode DARKEN was to make life easier for the user. As standard, Adobe Reader doesnt show the overprint efftct - you have to change a setting in Adobe Reader to see the overprinted effect. However, Adobe Reader shows the blend mode effect as standard, so using Blendmode DARKEN eliminates a pitfall.

It turns out that there are additional advantages to using Blendmode DARKEN. I have described this in a presentation held at the IOF IT COmmission Open Meeting in 2016. The presentation can be found at the IOF website. under IT commission Documents.

I hope this answers your question.
